Ami Rawal Desai - Lifestyle and beauty blogger
What words would you use to describe your style?
Timeless, trendy & effortless- Timeless & trendy may seem like an oxymoron but it with clothing, I love classic staples that I can keep forever but also pair with a contemporary trend. And of course, I look forward to one day passing down the killer pieces to my daughter. And when I'm wearing my "mom" hat, it's all about pieces that are comfortable but still chic. Effortlessly throwing on a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans and an oversized v-neck isn't always the easiest task, but it's gotta look that way -- kind of like the no makeup makeup look :) For me, style is about looking back at something 10 years down the line and believe that look transcends time.. it's one of the important questions I ask myself before making a large purchase.
What are your three favorite pieces in your closet right now?
1) My high waisted bell bottoms from James Jeans (they go with anything and is an easy look to take from day to night.. versatility is everything to me given my busy schedule!)
2) A vintage Indian black silk shawl my Mom gave to me years ago. It's so easy to grab and wear over an LBD, or wrap around like an infinity scarf
3) I'm a sucker for wrap dresses - they complement almost any body shape (pregnant or not!) and make you feel so feminine. I have this killer long blue & white DVF that definitely makes a statement.
What does the term “bossCHIC” mean to you?
-Being able to wear many different hats and have my success in each reinforce the others – Family, Career, Health, Spirituality
-Having the power to pay it forward to future generations of women looking to follow in your footsteps
-Stepping outside of your comfort zone and making your passion your paycheck
-Not being afraid to pursue your dreams, even if that means failing along the way – belief and relentless will are core to being a “boss”
-One of my favorite quotes "Attract what you expect. Reflect what you desire. Become what you respect. And mirror what you admire"
Who is the ultimate bossCHIC in your eyes?
Michelle Obama. Puts her girls first while serving as a role model to the world. Balances being a global icon, FLOTUS, and a great Mother. Paragon for a BossCHIC
What was the best advice a mentor or manager ever gave you? What advice do you have for the next generation of ‘bossCHIC(ks)?
-Invest in yourself..and most importantly, believe in YOUR brand and what you stand for. Then and only then will others believe too
-Don't be afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.
What was your 'aha' moment? How did you decide to do what you do today?
I found love young and therefore got married young. I thought if I had kids it was going to end any type of successful career I was creating for myself. I was so wrong-- having children has been the catalyst for me wanting to shoot for the stars and hustle harder than I ever have. When I hosted OWNshow, I was asked to go on national tour with Oprah when my daughter was just a few months old. After some real consideration, I pursued the opportunity and it became a game changing experience for me. I traveled to a different city for 8 weeks while my husband and family held down the fort. The experience emboldened me to believe in myself and more deeply commit to my calling. When OWN ended, I still had a deep passion for hosting, in addition to being a beauty and lifestyle expert. With my experience in TV (both behind the lens and infront of the camera) i decided to combine my passions and become a beauty & lifestyle personality and host. I created it, set a game plan, and am doing it. And I am loving every second of the journey!
